Join us as third-generation Japanese American artist Bruce Yonemoto discusses his exhibition Currents 104 at the Saint Louis Art Museum, where he will present two series of photo-based work. Inspired by the ways in which visual culture mediates our understanding of history, politics, and race, Yonemoto explores two significant wars in America’s past: the Civil War and the Vietnam War. Yonemoto mines civilization’s inclination and fascination for war, investigating the narratives of both wars through altered and actual representations of the soldier. In both series Yonemoto explores the role of photography in making and shaping modern identity. This program takes place at Mark C. Steinberg Hall at Washington University in St. Louis. Free.
This year’s Ann W. Olin lecture features National Public Radio Special Correspondent Susan Stamberg, one of the most popular broadcasters in public radio. Stamberg will speak on the power of great art to reach our psyches as nothing else can and discuss the many roles that museums play as places for contemplation, education, and solace in times of crisis and confusion. Stamberg will explore the work of two artists who responded to the encroachment of modern life at very different periods—the 19th-century French painter Gustave Caillebotte and 20th-century American painter Edward Hopper. This program takes place at the May Department Stores Company Auditorium in John E. Simon Hall at Washington University in St. Louis. Tickets: $15 ($10 Members). Tickets are available through MetroTix at www.metrotix.com and at 314.534.1111.
