Lari Pittman: A Decorated Chronology

Presented by Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis
Visual Arts
General Audiences

Lari Pittman: A Decorated Chronology is the first survey of the work of the preeminent Los Angeles painter in an American museum in nearly twenty years. Internationally celebrated for the use of exuberant color and painstaking detail to address contentious subjects such as sexuality, desire, and violence, Pittman’s paintings combine a visual breathlessness with a sophisticated formal logic to intertwine the personal and the political. Comprising thirty seminal large-scale paintings, including a twenty-four-part works on paper series, all borrowed from major museums and private collections across the United States, this exhibition illustrates and celebrates the development of Pittman’s expansive practice from 1985 to the present.

Lari Pittman: A Decorated Chronology is organized for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis by Kelly Shindler, Assistant Curator. This exhibition is generously supported by Gladstone Gallery, New York; Regen Projects, Los Angeles; Anon
