William Christenberry: Southern Artifacts

Presented by Sheldon Art Galleries
With support from the Regional Arts Commission.
Visual Arts
General Audiences

This exhibition presents an overview of photographs and selected sculpture by internationally recognized artist William Christenberry from the 1960s onwards. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1936, William A. Christenberry, Jr. grew up on a farm directly across the field from one of two families that were the inspiration of writer James Agee and photographer Walker Evans’ groundbreaking book, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), which Christenberry discovered while studying art at the University of Alabama in the late 1950s. The vernacular structures, cultural artifacts and landscapes of Hale County, Alabama are woven into works that are a rich synthesis of found images and objects. Though based in Washington D. C. since 1968, Christenberry returns home frequently where the landscape and culture of Hale County serves as his primary inspiration.
